The best of them is the one who begins with the greeting.) Brotherhood is not merely limited to a family bond, but also a bond in faith and religion in the world. This brotherhood and unity are also not exclusive within a school and sect, but are global and beyond them. Differences in schools of thought may occur and are, in fact, inevitable. But the most important thing is that differences should not cause division.The most important pillar of the Hajj pilgrimage and rituals is the essence of brotherhood among believers. The men%u2019s attire, called the ihram, consists of two pieces of cloth, one worn around the waist and the other over the shoulders. The simplicity of this garment, worn by millions of pilgrims from all over the world, symbolizes the essence of unity and equality in Islamic brotherhood.The fundamental characteristic that must be maintained by this Ummah is a unity that cannot be divided. The Hajj should inspire this Muslim Ummah to create networks among themselves that would lead to the formation of convergence.To achieve this great goal, the following steps are necessary: having a full understanding of the meaning of Hajj, implementing the teachings of Hajj in daily life, and using the Hajj season for dialogue, consultation, and coordination among scholars, rulers, and the Ummah.If these three things are practiced by the pilgrim, it will facilitate the emergence of unity and integrity in the Islamic world, at least at the regional level. This is because all three are reflections of the spiritual effort to get closer to the religious ranks, leaders, and scholars.Let us hope, we can use the Hajj and the lessons learned from it as a means to progress towards the grand agenda of strengthening brotherhood, unity, and cooperation among Muslims around the world.
